Students learn best when they're allowed and encouraged to explore freely - this has long been common knowledge among educators. The challenge of our profession is mating this to a very rigid and thorough set of content standards set out before us. In Algebra 2, we've adopted a new curriculum that for the first time has this idea at its very core. College Preparatory Math re-structures the mathematics classroom to something more reminiscent of a modern work-place. Students focus on exploring a problem rather than answering a question, and through their peers come to realize they are capable of much more together than they thought possible alone. As an educator, I recognize the effectiveness of team-based learning in the classroom; as a community we recognize that by teaching students to rely on each other, we prepare them for the unknown occupations of tomorrow's workplace. There will be struggles as we adapt to this mentality, there will be pain as we evolve - but the payoff is immeasurable.
