Concepts of Engineering and Technology is a freshman course which serves as the first step into the rocketry focused engineering program at YCHS. This course provides a solid foundation for students interested in pursuing engineering based careers, regardless of discipline. Furthermore, it offers a solid background in leadership and teamwork skills that are necessary in a multitude of disciplines, so I encourage students to try it out even if they're not particularly interested in engineering (yet).
The course first examines what it means to be an engineer, and develops the skills necessary to succeed in this type of environment. Technical drawings, presentations and process documentation are a strong focus. As the first rung on the ladder at YC, this course also introduces some of the themes that will be reiterated and built upon as students progress through subsequent courses: CAD and CAM (Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing respectively), Aerodynamics and Project Management. For this course, that means increasing student knowledge into more technical design software using Onshape, exploring stability in flight through the construction and test flight of different model rockets, and understanding what it means to set clear goals and objectives as well as how to hold yourself accountable to those goals.
